The community has been getting a lot of the same questions, and there hasn't been a single place to easily find it. So this is what will become the definitive (and simple) guide to starting to play this great game.
A) BOOSTER PACKS
Why do they vary SO greatly in price, and what should I buy?
The game's cards are currently divided into 2 factions - Assassin and Templar. Here's how you tell between the two, by a little symbol top left of the card name:
The assassin pack, mixed pack and Templar pack all give you 12 cards per pack, 1 rare, 3 uncommon, 8 common. The difference is that they contain Templar, Assassin and A random spread between the two, respectively.
For the same amount of points (let's say 1000), you can get:
120 cards
10 packs x 12 Templar cards (total 10 rares, 30 uncommons & the rest commons),
or 24 cards
1 pack x 12 Assassin cards & 1 pack x 12 Templar cards (total 2 rare, 6 uncommons & 16 commons)
THE BOTTOM LINE:
BUY TEMPLAR PACKS IF: You are starting up, want to see what the game is about, and need some decent cards for a decent deck. Templar packs get you the number of cards you need to build decks.
BUY ASSASSIN PACKS IF: You are a more advanced player and is ready to commit to the game. Assassin cards are more competitive and advanced, so are necessary if you're playing against the more experienced guys.
BUY MIXED PACKS IF: You feel like gambling. Ubisoft says that there is exactly 50/50 chance of getting a Templar rare (which means you spent 500 for 100's worth) or an Assassin rare (which means you spent 500 for 900's worth). Overall the chances are quite equal, but for surety, you should stick to NOT mixed packs: buy Templar for quantity, Assassin for quality. You can't start to play with just quality.
B) GETTING ANIMUS POINTS
Animus points are the currency with which you buy boosters. There are 3 ways currently to get the points:
This is very important, all players should do this first!:
1) Playing through single player:
This is the first thing you should do. Finishing the campaign will net you about 1000 points, which you should put towards Templar packs. This will get you a good number of cards to build beginner decks with. Strategies for starting players have been elaborated in this great thread: acreedrecollection.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=strategyid&action=display&thread=16.
2) Playing online:
Beating other players will get you a maximum of 300 points every 24 hours:
3 wins in 24 hours = 100
7 win in 24 hours = another 100
15 wins in 24 hours = another 100
3) Buying points:
Clicking on the top left of the booster purchase screen (on the amount) will allow you to buy points at anything from $1 for 500 points to $50 for 30k points. The more you buy, the better the rate of exchange. The biggest bundle will get you 5000 points more than the first bundle, which is 5 Assassin packs.
C) IS THIS AN EXPENSIVE GAME TO PLAY?
As with most CCGs (Collectible Card Games), Recollection is not as cheap as most app store purchases to play at a competitive level. However it's not nearly as expensive as other established CCGs like Magic, Pokemon, etc.
From personal experience:
$10 will get you enough cards to understand the game further than the tutorial/singleplayer
$50 (mostly templar, some assassin) will get you enough cards to really explore the dynamics and combos
$150 (assassins all/most of the way) will get you to be pretty competitive in the top 5% of the leaderboard and playing some great decks.
It's a bit like playing sports, like Golf for example - if you love the game, it'll be a worthy investment as you buy the professional gear and clubs. If you don't see yourself playing in a month - rather don't get vested.
There will be an Auction House coming, which will allow players to trade and sell their cards, and will probably reduce the amount you need to spend to get to the cards you need selectively. It's currently slated for a April 2012 release at the time of editing.
D) EXP POINTS
You will gain experience from playing online and single player games, up to a (mysterious) maximum cap. It is not clear what benefits there are for leveling up - I suspect you get gold from it, but I can't be sure and Ubisoft hasn't made it clear.
