I haven't played pure thieves - like ever. So can't say if it is better. I do think that this is faster boosting agents and more versatile due to the family heirlooms. Grab anti agent or anti counter or what ever you need. I often have 6 x 8/8 agents or the likes with plenty of spares in my hand mid game.
I'm up for a challenge vs your thieves to test it out.
I think you are right on the 5 galata though. Grabbing it with heirloom will be too slow initially. Early counters do give me a headache. But then again vs non counter decks they are garbage.

I came to realize that it's cheaper and faster to play a Thieves variant. I'm not sure that it's cheaper to play a Thieves variant here. When I looked at the market this morning, I thought I saw Altair, Assassin going for ~2,000 Animus Credits which is a lot pricier than Assassin Recruits. You'd probably also add La Volpe, Damat or Lanz to buff up your thieves, all of whom are pricier than Sly Smuggler. I agree that the thieves variant is faster but I still think the plebes variant is cheaper.

I made a version of this deck that has your a structure similar to yours and I really like it. I however, didn't hesitate to add other color cards that can boost the goal of the deck like forced inheritance and the works.
Its not bad dude to almost Every action card in the deck is a surprise, making me able to react to unexpected changes that occur.

I stand corrected about my Thieves remark! I just got my ^%#* served by you playing your traders deck, when I was playing a variation on Bronto's Ox Rush (which I think is a very strong deck). Although it was a close call, it proves to perform quite well in the current meta. GG! Also I've been play-testing a Thieves variation a few days now, and playing Traders is much more fun. Income is not a problem with Traders anyway, so you will probably see me playing more traders than thieves in the future

Like a La Volpe for 4 giving your thieves +2/0 instead of the 6 cost Thieves variant. You are right. Thieves are way more expensive in A$. And as remarked above, Traders are a very nice alternative over thieves, so if u are limited in credits, don't hesitate to choose to go for a traders deck!

You are right in that what can slow down the deck is the price of the main guys. Assassin recruits cost 4. Sly smuggler cost 6. The other merchants I use cost 0 and 1. I just made a modification to the deck to include 5 PP. This makes it possible to drop an assassin first day and if you have a cost 0 peasant in hand you can drop both for instant draw.
This little adjustment makes it more competitive, but it takes the concept of pure gold out of it.
I still think that this deck is faster than a thieves deck, since thieves take time to build up, whereas peasant get instant boost with deploying of sly smuggler.

With cheaper I meant cheaper playing costs. Ahhh... didn't think of it that way.

Haha, I did exactly the same in my deck. 5x PP and 3x Ancient Map to speed things up and give it more focus! Still do loose often! I also play 1 history glitch to buy myself more time, and let my beefed up Merchants score instead of using defender!

The deck does well, but it is not the best out there competitive wise. Counter decks can get the best of you early in the game, unfortunately. And the many strongholds is a problem. I'm considering putting back some of the militant intimidation for quick deploy of Galata district or important agents.
