There are a lot of complaints against counter decks on these boards. Interestingly, there are very few complaints against discard decks.
An obvious reason for this is that counter decks are stronger than discard decks (on average at least. I like to think that my own discard deck is very strong, but I am kind of biased here
)
This thread is not to complain about counters. People always complain about the strongest deck. This is true for all CCG's so we might as well get used to it. One could argue that the fun of all CCG's is to discover the strongest deck and beat other people with it, but lets not go there.
What I'd like to do, is compare two cards that are very similar but receive different amounts of hate.
In the blue corner, with an arrogant smile we have SULEIMAN!
This surprising 2/2 guy for 5 counters any launching action or agent. He has an impressive resume for an uncommon, selling for as much as 400 on the market.
In the red corner, wearing a dark cloak we have MYSTERIOUS STRANGER!
He is only 2/1 but cost only 3 and comes with an income boost of +1. He forces discard of the memory with highest cost from opponents hand we he comes into play.
---
Both cards are strong. They are strong because they generate card advantage, stopping 1 card from ever seeing play, and staying around afterwards with 2 power to begin scoring points with. If your opponent spends a card to deal with your Suleiman/Stranger, the end result is that you lost 1 card while your opponent lost 2. It doesn't take many of these trades before your opponent has zero cards in hand and you are free to win however you please.
Both cards are strong both early and late, both enabling a player who is ahead to keep his advantage. Stranger does this by launching so he comes into play right when opponent would draw a card (whether by change of day or from another card) while Suleiman waits around in hand, only coming in when opponent plays something to counter.
So, what are the differences?
Let's look at the two cards bit by bit.
Suleiman advantages:
Surprise (cannot be countered, campaigns or blocks immidiately)
Allows control over which card to stop
Opponent spends gold even though his memory doesn't resolve
2 defense
Stranger advantages:
Cheap
Income boost
Hits any card
Suleiman disadvantages:
Can't stop sites
5 cost
Can't enter play unless opponent plays a memory (or you counter your own) -> Can be played around
Stranger disadvantages:
11 cost cards
Can be countered
1 defense
Conclusion:
The two cards are extremely similar, but I think Stranger is stronger because of the income boost. Which makes me wonder: Why are people complaining so much about Suleiman?
I think it's because it feels worse to lose a card after you paid the gold. What do you guys think?
