I've been getting the out of sync message a few times. There wasn't even a count down. What's the difference between the two and how can I fix it? Will my opponents know it's out of sync or would they think I just rage quit?

I'm pretty sure that if you get an out-of-sync, your opponent gets it as well. The game is basically peer-to-peer and if the (I assume) time-stamps are no longer in sync you both get the out-of-sync error. So you still both have a connection, but something went wrong timing wise.
If you get a connection error when either one of the players has completely lost the connection (for a certain amount of time). The online player is usually rewarded with a win.

I think it comes often with bad connections. I played on a train with horrible connection and I got it quite often.
