Hey guys,
You are all aware that some cards can trigger game changing effects when they are discarded. A card like Maria Thorpe in combo with Abbazia di San Mercuriale can destroy two cards per day in the opposing side for just 4 ressources. It's strong, but it can still be countered.
The problem with this combo, and with all the discard effects in general, is the lack of visibility they have. This is toxic for the game as a noob won't understand what's going on and may get discouraged to play online. You know that we're in 2012 and if a game wants to grow, they have to be noob friendly.
Right now, the Dev Team doesn't have anything planned about this, and that's where we can come up with an idea to them.
So, how can we solve this issue? What ideas can we propose to the devs to make discard effects more noob-friendly?

I would have the card move from the hand toward the discard pile, but stop and turn to reveal itself. If it doesn't end at the discard pile it should then follow a path to wherever it is supposed to go.

I was thinking about the card that appears just above the card that causes the discard effect.

Having the discarded card appear just above the card that caused the discard, then having it move into the player's side in the center seems ok to me they can double tap on it to open while it's there.

Maybe it is enough to put a small exclamation point icon (or any other icon), on the upper right portion of the discarded card. The icon will last around 2 secs (just enough for players to notice it). If the card is put in the archive, then the archive button should be placed with a similar icon.

It could use the same mechanics as pick your poison or any of the cards that pick cards from the graveyard. Just show the card going to the graveyard and back in your hand.

It would be great to frame this in the context of the existing UI.
- Any card that causes discard gets an arrow to the players hand it affects. Visible when triggered or when tapped while resolving if it's non surprise. This makes it consistent with other targeted effects. - Discarded card is visualized moving from players hand to archive. - If card is removed from archive, animate it moving to player's hand.
The big change is the archive carousel maintains history. - Cards are displayed in order they arrived (with most recent being first). - Icon of the card that put them there (if any). Record the state of the card that put them there 'Oh their agent had threat, I didn't see that' Both can be tapped on to see the card text.
What happens when cards are removed from the archive? Two things: - Card is greyed out and moved to head of queue. This would only show up in the archive carousel. When picking cards from archive, only cards possible to pick would be shown. - Icon is updated with card that removed it. - Erased cards are also shown in the archive, greyed out with the card that erased them in the icon slot.
It's not perfect, but it gives new players a much better chance to figure out what's going on. You can click on the archive and answer questions like: - What killed my agent? - What countered my card? - What made them discard? - What erased my card? - What card did they take from Archive?
Archive maintaining history with some state is the main conceptual change. Moving card to head of queue is important so you can quickly see what just happened by tapping the archive icon.
UPDATE: clarified some points.

But they don't all go in the archive, right? It would lead to misinterpretations if they would (think Gardener).

In the case of gardener, cards would be in archive, but greyed out with gardener in the icon slot.

If the goal is to make the game more approachable to new players, I wonder how much a game playback feature would be used? In the heat of battle with multiple surprises flying it's sometimes hard to see through all the chaos. If you had the option to replay the game when finished would you? Fast forward and rewind to key moments, and see it from the opponent's point of view.

That would be great, but it is a strong request to the devs...
