As a preface to my comments, I would note that I am ranked in the top 100 players in this game, so I obviously play it way too much already. However, this latest update has caused me to consider severely limiting my devotion to this game. I'm not upset about the changes to the cards in principle, as I think the modifications may make for a more competitive environment. No longer will a player playing order be able to play one forced inheritance and be able to counter virtually everything that the opponent plays. However, after playing a few games following the update, I realized that the changes are such that the entire game has slowed down because income is much slower to build now that half of the memories that provided you income have had their income seriously reduced or removed altogether. The problem is that the best memories have either increased in cost or remain ten gold to cost or above. It's just going to take more time to get to play them. This slowing-down of the game impacts me greatly.
As I have noted in previous posts, if I try to connect to an opponent using this app, I frequently receive an "unable to connect to opponent" message on my standard wi-fi connection through my iPad. It, on average, takes me approximately ten tries to connect to an opponent. When I DO connect, I frequently also run into lag, out of sync, and disconnect problems. This is what, in part, led me to develop my Power and Responsibility deck, because I NEEDED a deck that was going to win in the first few turns to keep my sanity. I am not tech-savvy enough to know if this is a problem with Gamecenter or the app itself, but I do know that this is a problem that is limited to my experience with this game. I have had no trouble connecting to opponents on other games on the iPad (such as Shadow Era), my PS3, or my Wii. My difficulties are limited to this game. I recognize that my wi-fi is a problem, as I've not had trouble using wi-fi in other locations, but the fact of the matter is that this is a persistent problem that has affected a number of other players. This is the third major update (the first two being the addition of the market and the Revelations expansion) that I have been around for that has failed to fix this problem. I should not have to look up how to set up a DMZ in order to play this game.
I was able to tolerate the lack of connectivity and push through when the games took two to three minutes. Now that the games are taking at least 50% longer than they used to take, I simply do not have the patience, time, or inclination to sit through ten minutes of "the game was canceled" or "unable to connect to an opponent" messages (when I even do receive such a message; on a number of occasions, the screen has just flashed and no game has started) before getting a matchup that is going to take several minutes to finish.
This is a wonderful and dynamic game that the developers have created, and it is in so many ways superior to its online CCG cousin Shadow Era (which has devolved into a "who goes first wins" game, especially in games between two human heroes). However, with the radical slowing down of the game, I simply cannot continue to trudge through the morass of connection problems. I gave up on Shadow Era because of a fatal flaw in the game design; unfortunately, I am having to give up on this game because of the developer's failure to implement the one thing Shadow Era does well (matchup hosting through the app and not Gamecenter with actual competitive rankings). I'll continue to monitor the updates because I want to continue playing and supporting this game. In its current state, however, I simply cannot do so.
